Abstract
Aircraft Components, the first Dowty company, was formed early in 1931, only 28 years after the Wright brothers' first flight, by George Dowty, a young man with ideas, drive and an accommodation address in London. From this one‐man project, with no premises, has grown an international Group involved in the design and manufacture not only of aircraft hydraulic equipment but also of high technology products for a wide range of industries. Almost without exception, however, these developments have emanated from the main stem of hydraulic engineering. The Dowty Group now numbers more than 40 companies employing over 16,000 people in 11 countries supported by a world‐wide network of licensees, agents and distributors. The Group's annual turnover currently exceeds £300 million.
