Abstract
MODERN airports have to cope with fuelling requirements several times greater than a few years ago. The increasing number of wide body aircraft and the growth in tank capacities and acceptance rates has meant that large quantities have to be available at all times. Uplifts of 30 000 Imp gal (140 000 litres) are common with the Boeing 747B and similar aircraft, delivered at a rate of 850 gal per minute, per wing. Comparison with the Comet of 1952 may be made, which had a total capacity of 6000 Imp gal (27 200 litres) with the fuel being delivered at 200 gal per minute to each wing.
