Abstract
MOST of the papers read to the Approach and Landing Accident Prevention forum held at Washington by the National Transportation Safety Board were concerned primarily with the human element as the cause. Indeed, it was quoted that 72 per cent of all civil jet accidents are blamed upon the crew. But, it was pointed out, while every effort should be made to eliminate instances of inadequate crew training, poor crew co‐ordination and poor crew discipline, “the most meaningful area to apply effort to reduce approach and landing accidents is in the tools given to the flight crews to do the job”.
