Abstract

A grant of £31,357 for three years has been awarded by the Science Research Council to the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at the University of Southampton for research into the reduction of aircraft noise. The research is to be carried out by the Acoustics Croup in the Institute. The award comes at a time when the question of aircraft noise is being recognised as a major problem, and the study will involve methods of suppressing the high‐frequency noise predominant during the approach and landing of aircraft. Research will be undertaken particularly into the principles concerned in the design of ‘liners’, a means of absorbing this noise, which is emitted from the fan and inlet ducts of turbofan engines. The grant is further recognition of the growing reputation of the Acoustics Group which is part of the largest and most famous institute of its kind in the world.
