Towards an Interpretive Model of Information Systems Implementation

Abstract

This paper draws on the literatures concerned with information systems, organisational interpretation and organisational symbolism, to formulate an interpretive model of information systems implementation. Further, it suggests that an interpretive approach to understanding the change processes associated with the implementation of an information system might be preferred to traditional ‘factors’ and ‘impact theoretic’ perspectives, which do not adequately account for important symbolic and cognitive phenomena. The labels ‘information system’ and ‘information technology system’ are here used interchangeably. The motivations which prompt this paper are five.
