MATERIALS
Abstract
Hot‐processed prepolymer systems. A new range of materials which are said to be tougher in terms of impact, abrasion and corrosion resistance than the hardest steel and more resilient than natural rubber is transforming the operating life of mining and mineral processing equipment worldwide. The new materials are a range of high performance elastomers: the Irathane 2855 range developed by Irathane International. Working closely with Charlestown Engineering, Irathane's polymer chemists have produced several two‐component systems based on MDI‐terminated quasi prepolymers with varying hardnesses. With process temperatures in the range 30–55°C they can be easily moulded to form coatings, linings and cast parts with hardnesses ranging from 70–90 Shore. There is also a fire retardant grade with British Coal Approval in certain underground applications.
