Abstract

The design, construction and protection of storage tanks is not one of the most complex problems which the chemical engineer has to tackle but it is well worth detailed consideration, particularly in view of the economies and efficiencies which can be obtained. Various materials are used for the construction of such tanks, particularly stainless steel, high‐grade aluminium, wood or, in the case of exceptionally large tanks, concrete. The majority of such vessels are, however, made of mild steel or cast iron, particularly the former, and it has become almost standard practice to line them with rubber or ebonite, materials which give protection in respect of a wide range of corrosive chemicals.
