Abstract

In the short span of 13 years since Asda started, they have made a tremendous impact on the British retail scene. Not least they have developed a reputation as one of the biggest and most efficient operators of the superstore, and in recent years they have pioneered the concept of the district centre superstore. Their experiments in physical distribution, and especially in caging, have led not only to savings in handling costs but a reduced area, in national terms, of storage space and consequent increase in selling area. With 6.8% share of the UK grocery market, they currently rank third in AGB's league table of grocery retailers.
