MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT AND THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HOME‐COMING
Abstract
This is about a phenomenon which appears to be widespread and yet hitherto undocumented. The phenomenon first came to the writer's attention as the “Friday night row”, which seems to be a common experience of participants on residential training courses on their return home. Whilst the evidence on which the analysis herein is based is anecdotal, this does not mean the subject is trivial; the “psychology of home‐coming” is a neglected but potentially vital aspect of the whole “transfer of learning” issue. A tentative analysis of the underlying causes of home‐coming difficulties and the “triggers” that precipitate them will be presented; this discussion leads to some thoughts on how problems may be avoided.
