Flood season alert – new flood guides for home owners

At the start of the winter flood season and the launch of its annual Flood Awareness Campaign, the Environment Agency is promoting two new guides for home owners on preventing and dealing with flood damage. The practical advice guides are based on the results of a year-long research project between the agency and the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA).

Damage Limitation contains everything a home owner needs to know about floodproofing their property. It includes simple measures for minimising floodwater entry and damage, and advice on incorporating flood-resistant techniques into home-improvement projects.

After A Flood gives comprehensive advice on how to clean up, dry out, restore and repair a home after flooding, together with details of organisations that can offer information, support and practical help in the clean-up operation. Damage Limitation and After A Flood guides are available free from the Environment Agency's Floodline, Tel: 08459881188, a 24-hour information service. Two million properties in England and Wales are at direct risk from flooding. For these people the risk of a flood is greater than the risk of a house fire, yet many people remain unaware of the basic steps they can take to help prepare their property and themselves.
