22 June 1999 – The Congo
A cholera epidemic in Congo's capital has claimed 50 lives and infected at least 450 people in recent days, the country's health minister said today. The disease had been transmitted by refugees from rural central Congo, said the minister, Mashako Mamba.
1 July 1999 – Saint Etienne En Devoluy, France
All 21 people on board a cable car in the French Alps have been killed after it plunged 260 feet to the ground, local officials have confirmed. The accident happened at the resort of Saint-Etienne en Devoluy in the Hautes Alps region, near Gap. Most of those on board were engineers travelling to a summit observatory, which is connected to the resort. There were also some tourists in the car.
Rescuers said they found 20 bodies near the smashed car, which fell just after 07.00 hrs on the way up to the stellar observatory atop 2,700-metre-high Pic de Bure from the resort of Saint-Etienne en Devoluy, near the town of Gap. A local government spokesman confirmed 20 people had died, revising an earlier toll of 21, and said none of the passengers had survived the impact. Nothing was left from the wrecked car lying in a field except for the large metal hook.
