The main activities related to the PCIF proceed apace.

The ADE proceeds with its chapter meetings, the ICT held its Annual Symposium on 2 May in High Wycombe and the first workshop of the year "Substrates for microvias" was held on 14 March. The Annual Conference is in the planning stage for 17 October in Cheltenham. A joint event "E Commerce" with the FEI was held on 7 February. All of these were well attended albeit even with the difficult business environment experienced by all.

A series of visits are being conducted especially to ACeM members to listen to their views of the PCIF and what services they require. This is part of the continuing process that ensures that we continue to deliver the services our members require and demand.

The PCIF's highly successful and energetic Environmental Working Group had an excellent meeting at ETSU's premises in Harwell on 1 May. The full agenda took most of the day and there are exciting plans to move forward on a number of key projects including the legislation database and development of the best practice guide. A draft scoping study has been discussed with the DTI for further funding for a number of projects.

A major effort is in train to put together a proposal to attract government funding for the establishment of educational courses on a national scale for printed circuit board design engineers. The feasibility study has been completed and the next stage is in progress. If successful this will be put in place to address the critical skill shortage in this field in the UK and also will satisfy one of the key objectives of the The Association of Printed Circuit Board Design Engineers (ADE) which was established in January 1999.

I was asked to represent the PCIF and the FEI at the recent IPC Expo 2001 event in Anaheim, California, which was a privilege and very interesting. I was kindly granted by the IPC a place in the president's forum, which included the leaders of many of the USA's printed wiring board fabrication companies. I had meetings with both the chairman and the president of the IPC and also with the leader of the IPC's designers council. I also shared stand duty with the new chief executive of the EIPC, Jo Warnier. The IPC organised an excellent event, which was well attended.

The ICT's Annual Symposium was comprehensively and very ably reported on by Pete Starkey and is included in this edition. It was an event with a rich series of papers and well attended finally.

Times are tight now and the PCIF is very conscious of this. Please contact us if we can be of assistance to you.
