Preface
Article Type: Preface From: COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Volume 29, Issue 5
It is our great pleasure to introduce this special issue of COMPEL with selected papers presented at the 18th International Conference on Electrical Machines – ICEM 2008, held in Vilamoura, Portugal, from 6 to 9 September 2008. The Conference was organized by the APDEE – Portuguese Association for the Promotion and Development of Electrical Engineering.
The Conference had the Technical Co-Sponsorship from highly distinguished societies of the IEEE: Power and Energy Society (PES), Industry Applications Society (IAS), Power Electronics Society (PELS), Industry Electronics Society (IES) and from the IET.
ICEM is the only major international conference devoted entirely to electrical machines, and is recognized as one of the largest and most important scientific events in this field. Started in London in 1974, ICEM is now established as a regular biennial event. Very successful conferences were held in Cracow (Poland) in 2004, Chania (Greece) in 2006, just to mention the last two editions.
This conference, like its predecessors, is a world forum for specialists from academia, industry and research centers, engaged in the design, analysis, simulation, testing and teaching of electrical machines, to discuss current progress, future developments and trends, to exchange information and experiences, in the field of electrical machines.
The conference contributions concern 11 topics:
- 1.
conventional machines;
- 2.
permanent magnet machines;
- 3.
regulation and control;
- 4.
fields modelling;
- 5.
renewable energy;
- 6.
transportation and special machines;
- 7.
maintenance and monitoring;
- 8.
losses and efficiency;
- 9.
design and materials;
- 10.
drives and actuators; and
- 11.
education.
Specialists, scientists and engineers, from 57 different countries participated in ICEM 2008. They submitted more than 720 extended summaries and from these 600 high quality papers were accepted and presented at the conference in 15 oral and five poster sessions.
In conjunction with the conference, a technical exhibition took place where many leading companies showed their latest technological developments and achievements.
We hope that the papers presented in this issue of COMPEL will provide interesting and novel information to the wider research community.
