Article Type: Editorial From: COMPEL: The International Journal for Computation and Mathematics in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Volume 28, Issue 4
It is a great pleasure to introduce this special issue of selected papers presented at the 13th International IGTE Symposium on Numerical Field Calculation in Electrical Engineering held in September 2008 in Graz, Austria. More than 110 colleagues from 21 countries have contributed to IGTE 2008, presenting 33 oral speeches and more than 60 posters. Besides, all topics related to numerical techniques in electromagnetism, optimal design and parameter optimization in electromagnetism as well as reconstruction problems enjoyed great popularity.
A limited number of 24 papers has been selected by a panel of three reviewers per paper. We take the opportunity to thank the reviewers from all over the world for their precious work.
We hope that this special issue will give an impression of what was presented at IGTE 2008 and will provide interesting and new information to the reader.

Kurt Preis is 60
The Institute IGTE organising this symposium has long been synonymous with the name of Kurt Preis who has recently turned 60. It was Kurt who, about 30 years ago, established the subject of this symposium, “Numerical Field Calculation in Electrical Engineering” as the defining research direction of IGTE. All members of our team have, in one way or another, been recruited by him and his enthusiasm for computational electromagnetics is continuing to motivate us in our work. Without Kurt, the series of IGTE symposia could never have evolved to its present international significance. We have therefore decided to dedicate this 13th International IGTE Symposium to Kurt Preis.
