Best Paper Awards at First CAER International Annual Conference

CAER Best Papers of 2009

The CAER Best Papers of 2009 were announced at the CAER International Annual Conference hold in Beijing October 31-November 1, 2009. A selection committee has been organized by the China Agricultural Economic Review (CAER) to review all the papers in the first volume of CAER. The best papers for the first prize went to “Business and financial risks of small farm households in China” (prize US$3,000; Vol. 1 No. 2), the second prize went to “A gendered view of reforming health care access for farmers in China” (prize US$1,000; Vol. 1 No. 2), and the third prize went to “The impact of remittance income on rural households in China” (prize US$1,000; Vol. 1 No. 1).

China's top agricultural policy maker Xiwen Chen, Deputy Director of Office of Central Leading Group of Finance and Economy, Director of Office of Central Leading Group of Rural Affairs, and the Director of Center for Rural Development Policy; and Professor Bingsheng Ke, President of China Agricultural University awarded the certificates to the Best Paper Prize authors.

The first prizePaper title: “Business and financial risks of small farm households in China” (Vol. 1 No. 2)

Rong Kong, Professor of College of Economics and Management at Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University. She obtained her BA, MA, and PhD from Northwest Agriculture and Forestry University, People's Republic of China.

The second prizePaper title: “A gendered view of reforming health care access for farmers in China” (Vol. 1 No. 2)

Huixia Liu (Plate 2), Associate Professor of School of Economics and Management, Northwest University, Xi'an, China. She received her Bachelor degree in Arts, Master degree in Economics, and PhD in Economics from Northwest University in 1990, 1996, and 2006, respectively. Linxiu Zhang, Professor and Deputy Director of the Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). She obtained her PhD from University of Reading in England. She has been working on agricultural and rural development policy research in China for the last 26 years. She won NSFC's Outstanding Young Scientist Award in 2003 and also CAS “100 Talents” award in 2007. She has also been serving at the boards of few international organizations, such as the World Fish Centre, the World Agrofroestry Center (ICRAF) and the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD).

Gale Summerfield, Associate Professor and Director of Women and Gender in Global Perspectives Program, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research areas are gender and global human security; transition in China and Southeast Asia; transnational migration; development and globalization.

Yaojiang Shi, Professor of the School of Economics and Management at Northwest University, China. He is also the Director of Northwest Socioeconomic Development Research Center. His research interests include the emergence and development of economic enterprises in rural China, the process of political nominations in China rural areas of China, and how political incentives affect government performance.

The third prizePaper title: “The impact of remittance income on rural households in China” (Vol. 1 No. 1)

Steve Snyder, Fiscal Officer for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in Columbus Ohio. He received his MS in Agricultural Environmental and Development Economics from The Ohio State University.

Wen S. Chern, Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Economics at the National Chung Cheng University; and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics, Ohio State University.
