Along with the increase in computers in libraries, over the last decade the demand for AV materials has also increased. According to an LJ/Cahners Research survey of 486 public libraries, AV budgets have increased by an average of 53 percent. According to the LJ annual budget survey, however, in that same period materials budgets have only increased by about 36 percent. Seventy-eight percent of the libraries surveyed reported that their AV budgets have grown over the past five years. The increase for these libraries is 71 percent. Of the libraries sampled, more than four out of ten have a separate budget for one or more specific AV materials. This increases to six out of ten libraries among those serving populations of 100,000 or more.
