Vale Professor Alexander Kouzmin
Article Type: Vale Professor Alexander Kouzmin From: Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Administration, Volume 4, Issue 2
Alexander Kouzmin was Professor of Management at the Southern Cross Business School and Adjunct Professor of Management at the University of South Australia. Prior to these appointments, he held chairs or professorships and adjunct and visiting positions at a number of national and international universities including Cranfield, Western Sydney and Rutgers. He obtained an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering (1967), an honours degree in Political Science (1970) and a post-graduate research degree in Political Science (1976), all from the University of Melbourne. Professor Kouzmin’s scholarship was extensive. His research interests included Organizational Design; IS/ICT Development and Vulnerabilities; Comparative and Cross-Cultural Management; Administrative Reform and Globalization; and Crisis Management. Professor Kouzmin published ten books, contributed more than 80 chapters to national and international books, presented research papers and keynote addresses at more than 230 international congresses/symposia and published some 260 research papers and review articles in leading international-refereed journals. In 2003, The American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) awarded Professor Kouzmin, and two co-authors, the Mosher and Mosher Award for the best Public Administration Review paper written in that year. He supervised/co-supervised 52 Doctoral candidates and served on 20 international editorial boards and was the founding co-editor of the Journal of Contingencies and Crisis Management. Professor Kouzmin was highly involved in the performance review of government and semi-governmental agencies and in the development of related training programmes. He was a Director of the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation and a Member of the Group of Experts, advising on Public Economics and Public Administration and, chaired the International Panel that conducted the Programme Evaluation of the International Nuclear Information System within the International Atomic Energy Agency. In 1991 the UN-affiliated Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration gave him an award for distinguished service to international management teaching and research. Professor Kouzmin died in May 2011 just after this paper was submitted to this journal. This co-written paper is the final academic journal publication of Professor Kouzmin’s glittering career. Alex Kouzmin was a long time supporter of this journal, especially given its mission to Asia Pacific scholarship and its drive to support early career academics. The loss of his fierce intellectual energy, his intense interest in ideas and the world around him, his larger-than-life personality and his mentorship and genuine concern for others is deeply felt within the academic community.
