New professional association proposed for the UK

The Library Association and the Institute of Information Scientists in the UK have issued a consultative document, Our Professional Future: A Proposal for a New Organisation for the Library and Information Profession. The URL is http://www.la-hq.org.uk/directory/prof_issues/opf.html The proposal is to merge the two organisations into the information and library association (ILA) with the mission: "ILA affirms that access to information, ideas and works of imagination is fundamental to a thriving economy, democracy, culture and civilisation. ILA is therefore committed to enabling its members to achieve and maintain the highest professional standards and to encouraging and supporting them in the delivery and promotion of high quality services."
