Dunlop Aviation Ice Protection & Composites (DAIPC) has delivered the first production standard engine air inlets for the Sikorsky S-92 helicopter (Plate 11). This follows the successful wind tunnel tests, which were undertaken by DAIPC and Sikorsky at the NASA Glenn facility in Cleveland, Ohio.
The self-contained inlet and ice protection system developed by DAIPC is designed for quick and easy installation and removal. Each of the two intakes is attached by two electrical connectors and a single mechanical fixing.

Freedom from ice build-up is achieved by DAIPC designed moulded-in electrothermal foil elements. These follow the intricate close tolerance compound curves required to meet the aerodynamic requirements of the inlet. Temperature of the heater mat is continuously controlled by a system proven in both rotary and fixed wing aircraft applications. The pattern of heating intensities, developed using the results of extensive computer modelling and icing wind tunnel testing, is held to very tight limits.
