Coating for gas turbine components

Indestructible Paint Company Limited announced the launch of "Smooth Seal IP9444," a coating designed to increase the options available to the gas turbine industry for this type of product.

Described as an inorganic, sacrificial anti-corrosive material, Smooth Seal, in conjunction with IP9183, also provides an extremely smooth surface for turbine blades, resulting in a significant increase in engine efficiency.

The material is "non-proprietary" and can be applied by any suitably equipped coating company.

Developed by Indestructible for use in "gas paths," Smooth Seal was then subjected to a period of further development and refinement. This was carried out in conjunction with Component Coating Services Limited of Glasgow, a company with extensive experience of the application of gas turbine coatings.

The material was also subjected to a series of stringent tests by Rolls-Royce plc before gaining their approval and being launched onto the open market.

Testing at Rolls-Royce included continuous salt water fog for 1,000 hours; cyclic salt water fog/heat (450°C)/high humidity for 20 cycles; dry heat resistance for 1,000 hours @ 600°C and adhesion.

Smooth Seal IP9444 is now generally available, providing turbine manufacturers with a further coating option for this type of application.
