Corrosion of Monitor's wrought iron turret under study

Desmond Cook, a physics professor at Old Dominion University, and other workers have taken the first-ever core sample of the turret of the Monitor, the Union combatant in the World's first clash of metal warships early in the Civil War. They were checking for corrosion before determining how best to preserve the 145-year-old relic, raised from the Atlantic Ocean in 2002.
