Science panel calls for stricter EPA lead limit

The US EPA's panel of scientific advisers is recommending a more stringent national ambient air quality standard (NAAQS) for lead in direct contradiction of the agency's own December staff paper in which it stated it was considering revoking the air quality standard because lead air pollution has declined by 96 percent since 1980 and only two counties nationwide fail to meet the current limit of 1.5µg/m3 measured on a quarterly average. This limit has been in place since 1978 and is currently part of the EPA's mandated revision of the NAAQS.

The scientific advisers contend that lead dust is still a problem and further scientific deliberations on lead are necessary as NAAQS revisions are considered.
