Asian Paints commissions new powder coatings plant

Asian Paints, Mumbai, India's leading paint company and among the top ten decorative coatings companies in the world, has commissioned a new manufacturing facility at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh through its wholly owned subsidiary, Asian Paints Industrial Coatings Limited (APICL). This is Asian Paints' first Greenfield facility commissioned exclusively for manufacturing powder coatings.

Powder coatings has emerged as one of the fastest growing segments in industrial coatings at 20 percent annually on account of good growth rates recorded by white goods and the auto ancillaries segment. The new facility is expected to cater to this growing demand and will initially have a capacity to produce 1,200MT of powder coatings annually. The total capacity will be scaled up to 5,000MT per annum as projected by the project's master plan.

The plant at Baddi is Asian Paints' seventh paint manufacturing facility in the country and the second manufacturing facility for powder coatings. The other powder coating facility located at Sarigam-Gujarat was a result of the company's acquisition of Hawcoplast Chemicals Ltd in 2001.

With the inauguration of the Baddi plant, Asian Paints now has a manufacturing facility in both the Western and Northern zones of the country – the two key regions that contribute to the bulk of the national demand for powder coatings.

The plant has been built with special inputs from Protech Chemicals – Canada, Asian Paints' technical collaborator and one of the largest powder coatings manufacturers in the world. Technology from the company's existing powder coatings facility at Sarigam-Gujarat has also been incorporated in the Baddi facility, to enable it achieve higher efficiency and optimum productivity.
