Rising from the Ashes – Worksop is a big hit at the Oval

While millions of patriotic English cricket fans were watching the 2005 Ashes series against Austrialia reach its climax at The Oval cricket ground in London at the beginning of September, those who work at Worksop Galvanizings Ltd were taking a double delight in the unfolding proceedings.

The final dramatic match was played out against the spectacular back-drop of The Oval’s eye-catching new grandstand, with its curving roof and futuristic design, which now dominates one side of the ground – and around 200 ton of galvanized steel used in the construction of the new facility came from the Wedge Group’s company in Nottinghamshire.

Paul Robinson, Worksop Galvanizing Ltd’s Commercial Manager, said: “The stand was seen a lot on the TV during the Ashes match, and so it was great for us to have been connected with such a high profile project.

“A lot of the steel sections used for building the stand were very long, with the longest up to 19.5 m in length. Worksop Galvanizing Ltd has the only galvanizing bath in the country long enough to be able to admit sections this long in one go, and this was a key factor in winning the contract. The fabrication company Severfield-Reeve Structures, of Thirsk, Yorkshire were our customers and they knew of our capacity, which includes our 21 m-long fully-enclosed galvanizing bath. They knew we were the only company which could take these sections in a single dipping” (Plate 2).

He said the project at The Oval cricket ground was just the latest in a series of high profile galvanizing projects at UK sports venues being handled by Worksop Galvanizing Ltd and he said the company is looking forward confidently to further business opportunities over the next few years in connection with the building of new sites for the Olympic Games, being held in London in 2012.
