Unique MI-21 project to put metals knowledge on-line

A powerful information resource on metallic materials for manufacturing industry will be the outcome of collaboration between four South Yorkshire based organisations over the next 3 years.

The project, metals information for the 21st century (MI-21) will be undertaken through the National Metals Technology Centre (NAMTEC) by a partnership formed to combine the unique resources of the world metal index of Sheffield libraries, archives and information; TWI Technology Centre, Yorkshire and the materials information service of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. They will collaborate with specialist materials information company, Granta Design of Cambridge.

MI-21 will bring together comprehensive knowledge bases covering metals, alloys and welding consumables past and present, linking them with a variety of other metals information sources on the Internet.

The project is supported by the European Regional Development Fund through objective 1 and Yorkshire Forward, with further funding from the UK Department of Trade and Industry.

An initial trial service will be launched in June 2004, with the full service becoming available in December 2005.

The future plan is to enhance service coverage by incorporating information from other organisations and individual companies.
