An Akzo Nobel Coatings site in Denmark has been presented with a prestigious environmental award.

The company's wood coatings plant in Copenhagen – part of the industrial finishes business – recently received the Environmental Reward 2002 from the city of Copenhagen.

The honour was bestowed in recognition of the site's emission reduction program, which has resulted in a 90 percent drop in solvent emissions (VOC), from 40 tons per year to between 2 and 6 tons per year.

"We are extremely proud of this prize," said site Technical Manager Hans Bertelsen, who donated the DKK 25,000 prize (EUR 3,300) to local community activities based close to the plant.

He added that the Copenhagen plant would not be resting on its laurels following the success and plans to reduce VOC emissions even further.
