Moving the frontiers of friction stir welding

Moving the frontiers of friction stir welding

Seven countries are now involved in the EUREKA EuroStir project dedicated to accelerate the industrial take-up of friction stir welding (FSW). A second workshop to enable collaborators to disseminate their expertise was recently held at TWI Ltd, Cambridge, to build on the success of the first event held in July.

FSW is already used in industry for joining aluminium and copper alloys and has been demonstrated in laboratory experiments for metals with higher melting points such as steel and titanium. The workshop offers an opportunity to hear presentations from experts in the field, to discuss potential applications with the EuroStir collaborators and to see live demonstrations with state-of-the-art equipment.

This is believed to have been the largest public event of the EuroStir programme. The project was supported by the UK Department of Trade and Industry together with the governments of Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Poland, Spain and Sweden.
