Corus provides new paint line for Install tube at Corby

Corus provides new paint line for Install tube at CorbyKeywords: Shot blasting, Paint, Surface finishing, Corus Tubes

Corus Tubes, one of Europe's leading producers of welded steel tubes, is upgrading UK production of its BS 1387 "Install" range with a new shot blast unit for the recently refurbished paint line.

This significant investment will allow Corus Tubes to speed supply with Corby-produced tube for the UK market. Until 1 May 2002 red primer painted Install tube had been supplied from Corus Tubes' Oosterhout mill in The Netherlands.

General purpose steel tube to BS 1387 standard, popularly known as Gas List Tube, but now named Install, is used extensively in heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and compressed air. This is believed to be one of the world's most widely used tubular products, conveying, liquids, steam and gases. It is also said to be of immense value in a wide range of general engineering applications. Install is supplied in a choice of four surface finishes: self-coloured, varnished, galvanised or shot-blasted, and red primer painted.

"Since we launched red painted Install in 2000 we have seen strong demand for high quality shot-blasted and red primer painted tube," explains Stuart Welch, Corus' sales manager for Install.

"End users find that the red painted Install tube offers significant advantages compared with the traditional black varnish, which is only intended as transit coating. Customer research is reported to show that red primer painted Install leads to cost savings of up to 15 per cent of the value of the tube by removing the need to paint after installation. With the investment in the new paint line Corus has ensured that there is no premium to pay for red Install. Corus believes market forces will mean that soon the majority of Install ordered will be red painted.

"The Corus red painted product is recognised by stockists and users as superior to the competition with excellent paint adhesion and a smooth surface. We are now able to replicate this tube at Corby and thus fee the Oosterhout mill to serve customers in Continental Europe.

"It is a win-win situation for all parties. Our customers and end-users get faster delivery and save on the installed cost and we see a return on investment."

Corus Tubes will show stockists and customers the new line at a plant open day later in the year. Corus Tubes is a major supplier of gas list tube and manufactures Europe's widest range of hot finished, top quality products. Install is available from 8 to 150mm nominal bore (medium or heavy), plain ended or screwed and socketed.
