New steel coating system offers exceptional corrosion protection
New steel coating system offers exceptional corrosion protectionKeywords: Steel, Coatings, Corrosion resistance
A new treatment developed by Whitford Plastics Ltd in co-operation with Anogalv Ltd offers exceptional corrosion resistance and easy release for metal offshore and onshore pipeline fasteners and a wide range of steel components, including forgings, castings and machined parts.
The new Galvaplex system combines a high temperature galvanised zinc base coat with an advanced fluoropolymer coating, and provides controlled torque tension for precise tightening, exceptional corrosion resistance for longer fastener life, and easy release for the ultimate removal of fasteners and components.
The Galvaplex system combines the accuracy of Anogalv's high-temperature galvanising process (which ensures an even deposition of zinc over the entire fastener) with the exceptional corrosion resistance and controlled low friction of Whitford's Xylan 5200.
While other treatments can actually cause embrittlement of the fastener, the Galvaplex system does not affect the coated component's inherent strength. Although developed primarily as a fastener coating, the new system is ideal for a wide range of steel components.
When compared with conventional galvanising and coating processes, the Galvaplex system provides consistent uniformity in coating thickness – dramatically improving the performance-treated components and substantially reducing the number of defective components.
In addition to offering a broad range of applications in the offshore and onshore pipeline industries, the Galvaplex system can also be specified for potable water applications and has won approval from the Water Research Council.
