Premseal protection for Loch Ashie Reservoir

Premseal protection for Loch Ashie ReservoirKeywords: Seals, Protection, Membranes, Waterproofing

Consulting Engineers Earth Tech and main contractor Balfour Beatty Construction chose Premier Coatings Ltd's waterproof membrane system on the recently completed new-build reservoir at Loch Ashie Water Treatment Works for North of Scotland Water Authority.

The system approved was Premseal "LT" Primer, Premseal 100 "LT" cold applied waterproof membrane sheet, "reinforced" membrane for corner detailing, angle fillets "BB" series protection boards and board tape. According to Premier Coatings this system was used because the primer and the modified bitumen-polymer adhesive compound used with Premseal 100 "LT" will bond to green and damp concrete and at temperatures lower than with conventional adhesive membranes. In view of the periods of cold weather during construction the low temperature compound was invaluable.

Specialist subcontractor RPM Group of Pontefract carried out the work, where 7,300m2 of material were applied.

Premseal 100 is constructed from oriented cross-laminated high density polyethylene sheering and bitumen-polymer compound. The product is described as a tough, durable, cold applied self-adhesive sheet with an overall thickness of 1.5mm. A novel feature claimed of Premseal 100 is the selvage that enables a fast and secure seal on all side edge laps. It also has a blue RDPE film that is said to enable inspection for consultants and clients to be made easier and quicker. The waterproofing layer is said to be easily identified during any subsequent excavation, allowing greater care to be taken to avoid unnecessary damage.

Premseal 100 and Premseal 100 "LT" are stated to be approved by the Water Research Council and are UK WFBS-listed for use in potable water situations.

Premseal 100 waterproof membrane system reportedly prevents the ingress of water and water-borne aggressive salts, such as chlorides and sulphates, from penetrating concrete structures. It has BBA certification and has been used in many construction schemes including new-build shopping malls, hospitals, office buildings, etc.
