Protecting Corus nitrogen gas pipeline

Protecting Corus nitrogen gas pipelineKeywords: Winn & Coales (Denso), Pipelines, Corrosion prevention

A new 6km x 300mm diameter nitrogen gas pipeline installed at Corus steelworks in Scunthorpe, UK has been protected with Winn & Coales' Densoclad 70 Tape (Plate 2). It is an addition to the existing trunk line from the nearby BOC site and will carry nitrogen gas at a pressure of 7.5 bar for a variety of uses on the Corus site.

Contractors for the project were Grimsby Pipework Engineering.

Approximately 85 per cent of the new gas line will be at ground level mounted on concrete plinths, 10 per cent is at high level, and 5 per cent is buried.

Densoclad Tapes consist of a thick polymer bitumen adhesive laminated to a tough plasticised pvc backing. These cold applied tapes are designed for protecting buried or immersed pipes and fittings, as well as giving long-life protection above ground.

Winn & Coales also informs us that it is four years since the UK's RPM Group (Repair Protection & Maintenance) Ltd carried out environmental protection work in several plant areas at the Corus steelworks at Scunthorpe. The long term success of this project, plus RPM's proven track record, was a key feature in their obtaining a new contract, via main contractors Amec, for protection work at the Corus Port Talbot steelworks.

A large diameter pipe carrying hot gases from the blast furnace to a gas scrubber had reached the end of its working life. This has been replaced with a similar 96in diameter tapered and welded section which, because of its shape, is described as a lobster back bend. To ensure long life resistance to the hot gases, RPM has applied a lining of Winn & Coales' Archco-Rigidon 403D. This is a polyester based flake glass filled coating claiming excellent corrosion/erosion resistance in highly corrosive environments.

The lining was thickness checked after application and spark tested to ensure a pinhole-free surface.

The West Yorkshire based RPM Group are experienced corrosion engineers and approved applicators of the full range of Winn & Coales' Archco-Rigidon protective coating systems.
