On-site test system for monitoring metals in wastewaters

Environmental monitoring specialist Palintest Ltd informs us that it has extended its Tubetests® water analysis system with a new series of tests for fast, simple and accurate on-site measurement of metals in industrial effluents.

According to Palintest the test method is designed to be used by anyone in factory environments and can deliver significant cost savings over external laboratory analysis services. It requires minimal scientific knowledge and no special skills.

These new tests are aimed principally at metal finishers needing to monitor wastewaters to demonstrate compliance with regulatory controls. The system reportedly measures both free metals and complex compounds of copper (0-20mg/litre), nickel (0-20mg/litre), iron (0-25mg/litre), zinc (0-7 and 0-35mg/litre) and chromium (0-10mg/litre in both total and hexavalent forms). Existing Tubetests cover ammonia, nitrate, phosphate and COD.

The Tubetests system is said to enable wastewaters to be tested without the need to make up and dispense liquid reagents or use laboratory equipment. The tests are reported to be effective with most types of effluent, even those with extremely high pH, strongly bound complexes, high colour and thick, insoluble precipitates.

Test chemicals are supplied pre-measured and pre-mixed in disposable glass test tubes. When a water sample is added to a Tubetest it produces a colour change and the parameter under test is measured by a photometer which gives a direct reading on an LCD.

Up to 300 test results can be stored in the photometer's memory together with time, date and sample data. Results can be recalled to the instrument's LCD screen, downloaded to a PC database or output directly to a printer via a serial port.
