Protection for Forth Road Bridge expansion joints

Keywords Winn & Coales, Epoxy coatings

As part of their planned inspection programme, Forth Road Bridge Joint Board maintenance staff identified the need to renew the protective coating on the de-mag expansion joints (Plate 2). These joints, which accommodate longitudinal movement in the bridge deck, had previously been protected with a phenolic resin based paint coating.

As access to the expansion joints underneath the bridge is difficult, as is also the construction of staging, The Forth Road Bridge Joint Board looked for a paint coating system that would withstand the corrosive marine environment for at least ten years. The coating system eventually chosen was Winn & Coales' Denso S.T. epoxy mastic. Following shotblasting, under enclosed conditions, the Denso S.T. coating was spray applied.

The adhesion properties of Denso S.T. epoxy mastic are designed for surfaces that have been hydrojetted or power tool prepared. It also claims excellent wetting and deep penetration properties, and can be spray or brush applied.
