Magnetic drive chemical pumps

Keywords ITT Richter, Pumps

Magnetic drive close-coupled pumps are frequently the best choice for conveying aggressive or hazardous media. The drive magnet assembly is mounted without a shaft coupling directly on the motor shaft. This dispenses with the complicated aligning of the two shaft parts in conventional pumps. Experts are thought to like the generally simpler handling in the event of damage. The close-coupled pump can be readily replaced without calling in a specialised repair service. These pumps are said to run more quietly and have smaller dimensions due to their design.

The following is a practical example: magnetic drive close-coupled pumps from ITT Richter, Kempen (Plate 12), are used at a major chemicals concern to convey highly corrosive waste acids laden with abrasive solids. The medium is 800°C, 30 per cent sulphuric acid; the turbid liquid contains solids with a grain size of up to one millimetre in diameter; the medium is therefore very abrasive. Moreover, when the waste acid cools down, it leaves a slimy residue. The magnetic drive pump of the series MNK-B/F 65-40-200, a close-coupled pump with a fluoroplastic lining, exhibits a long service in this field, and there are good design reasons for this. The gap of 2.5mm between the inner magnet assembly and the can is very large in this pump owing to its design. These pumps are said to be also extremely insensitive to solids due to the material. If a particle 3mm in diameter enters the gap and scores the can, reportedly nothing drastic happens in this case. The can on the medium-side is made of PTFE and has a wall thickness of almost 3mm; it thus copes with these score marks without any problem. The outer metal-free CFK can absorbs the operating pressure.
