Santrade, Sandvik Steel's distributor of stainless steel and special alloy pipe fittings and flanges has produced a new stock range catalogue. Particularly featured among the total range of ISO and ANSI fittings and flanges is Sandvik Coupling-L, considered an alternative to conventional piping system flange joints for which Santrade reports increasing demand (Plate 2).

Used mainly for piping systems which have to be dismantled and reassembled regularly for cleaning or inspection, Coupling-L consists of two identical coupling flanges for butt welding to pipe ends, an "O"-ring gasket and two- or three-nut and bolt fastenings, depending on pipe size.

Sandvik Coupling-L is much smaller than conventional flanges and reportedly can be fitted into difficult or confined spaces. It also weighs only a fraction of a corresponding flange joint and can reduce considerably the total weight of an installation.

Bolts are positioned tangentially to the pipe and are said to be easily accessible even when walls or other surfaces are close to the pipeline.

When the clamps are tightened, the flange faces are pressed tightly together giving a rigid union that functions like a ring joint. Coupling-L is therefore said to be intrinsically safe as internal pressures are carried entirely by the clamps and not by the bolts. Couplings are supplied as a total item complete with bolts nuts, gaskets and flanges.

The flanges are produced in AISI 316L stainless steel with a minimum of 2.5 per cent molybdenum (W.Nr. 1.4435) and clamps in stainless steel AISI 304 (W.Nr. 1.4306) or carbon steel for the largest sizes. Three different types of "O"-ring gasket are available, manufactured from nitrile rubber, viton or PTFE.

Sandvik Coupling-L is available from stock for DN20 - DN200, working pressure PN40-PN16, and in ANSI sizes 0.75in. up to 8in. NB.
