Following the success of their first event, a "Workshop for Trade Coaters", the recently formed Paint and Powder Finishing Association (PPFA) is planning a number of other sessions later in the year.

The "Workshop for Trade Coaters" included a number of key subjects devoted to the views of trade coaters in the morning session, with a general discussion after lunch giving some insight into how the PPFA might support members.

Three important areas were highlighted: communications, promotion and training. Keeping busy coaters up to date with standards, legislation and other information was seen as a vital function of the PPFA, as was the need for some sort of scheme for evaluating skill levels and, possibly, the introduction of a recognised standard such as an industry-accepted NVQ.

Delegates felt that coaters were often viewed with some scepticism and the PPFA should consider methods to enhance the reputation of members, including the launch of a "seal of approval".

The PPFA has recently received part-funding from the DTI for a benchmarking mission to the USA in the autumn. Open to industrialists with particular interests in paints and powder coatings, the mission will focus on investigating differences between the industrial finishing scene in the USA and similar activities in the UK. A report will be disseminated to PPFA members in an effort to improve the competitiveness of UK industrial coaters.
