Plate 4 SPC has been awarded the exclusive UK licence to provide its heat exchange coils with Blygold, a powerful anti-corrosion coating developed in The Netherlands

Called Blygold, the new non-sacrificial coating reportedly prevents the severe loss of performance which can result from corrosion caused by aggressive process environments. We understand that under the agreement, SPC is the only UK company able to treat coils in the factory before any corrosion can occur. Coated coils are guaranteed for five years against corrosion and performance loss, provided that recommended cleaning routines are followed.

Without preventive measures, the corrosion of coil fins can lead to a swift and dramatic reduction in their ability to transfer heat, in severe cases by as much as 80 per cent in the first year. This leads to excessive energy consumption as plant has to work harder and longer in order to maintain the level of heat transfer required. Blygold treatment is reported to prevent these energy losses without any adverse effect on performance and only a minimal air pressure drop.

SPC also points out that, when compared to the current practice of specifying thicker fin material or higher grade coil material in order to prevent corrosion, coating can allow a significant reduction in the overall weight of the coil.

Blygold treatment is available for cooling, heating and refrigeration coils, run around coils and heat pipes. SPC also offers a special treatment which reportedly combines the anti-corrosive properties of the standard coating with a non-evaporative microbiocide. Designed to combat the growth of micro-organisms in the humid environment created by cooling coils, this treatment claims to significantly reduce the frequency with which air treatment systems need to be cleaned and disinfected.
