Plate 2 Honorary award for Leslie Silver

He was chairman of the Board of Governors of Leeds Polytechnic from 1989 and became the first Chairman of the Board of Leeds Metropolitan University in 1992. Mr Silver, former Yorkshire Businessman of the Year, is one of the region's most prominent figures, having been the founder and Chairman of Kalon Group plc and Chairman of Leeds United Football Club. He is a past president of the Paintmakers' Association, the Paint Industries Club, the Oil and Colour Chemists' Association, and the Paint Research Association.

His involvement in the life and culture of Leeds has been extensive. In the arts he was the Chairman of the new West Yorkshire Playhouse Development Committee from 1987 until the opening of the theatre complex, and he has been an important patron of the Leeds City Art Gallery. He was also involved in the first franchise of Radio Aire. In Leeds, however, he is perhaps best known for his 12-year chairmanship of Leeds United Association Football Club. Although he has now retired as Chairman he continues to serve on the Board.

Mr Silver was invited to become the first Chancellor of the University in recognition of his long-standing and continued support. In recognition of his services, the University's new City Campus Learning Centre will be named after him.
