H.B. Fuller Co. Ltd inform us that, at their Chesham, UK site, they have demonstrated an environmentally responsible approach to the storage of potentially aggressive solvent materials used in the manufacture of adhesives and associated products.

The company has invested in the installation of protective double skin systems with in-built leak detection monitoring for underground storage tanks operational at its production site in Buckinghamshire.

The work has been carried out by Prime Safe Ltd, whose "tank within a tank" system was developed in close collaboration with BP - initially for petrol forecourt applications.

Research work carried out by Prime Safe has further expanded the range of applications, using specially developed composite materials to provide either single or double skin solutions with permanent monitoring facilities.

At H.B. Fuller, although the initial inspection revealed that the tanks were in a good state of repair, the company was committed to implementing an environmentally secure solution which would eliminate any possibility of groundwater contamination from the tanks.

As a result, Prime Safe was commissioned to install double skin systems to all tanks, including 24-hour monitoring facilities. Work included a number of in situ tank modifications to remove existing baffles and increase storage potential.

Prime Safe reports that it offers a "one-stop" solution, from initial inspection through to implementation. The company's dedicated on-site teams are fully qualified and extensively trained to carry out all necessary modification and cleaning work. This includes the issue of gas free certificates, resulting in the swift completion of contract occasioning only minimal site disruption.

The upgraded tank farm is now said to be operating satisfactorily in line with existing and impending environmental and storage legislation.
