Elastomer thick film coatings produced by Plascoat have been approved by a Middle Eastern oil company for the corrosion protection of its electrical conduit systems employed in some of the world's harshest environments.
Plascoat coatings are now being applied as standard to the hot dip galvanized mild steel systems, designed for screwing together on oil production sites, with the coating carried out to NEMA RN 1 standard.
Plascoat also recently secured a major order for the Au Tarn Mei water treatment plant in Hong Kong, and specification for the Shek Wu Hui sewage treatment site.
The Middle and Far East orders are seen as breakthroughs because of a range of environmental conditions that put the coating to the ultimate corrosion protection test. They include high humidity and UV levels and coastal locations experiencing constant salt attack. The greater insulation properties of the thick film coatings, fluidised bed dipped, is claimed to be another factor in a market move away from paint, PVC or duplex coating systems.
In the case of Plascoat's PPAs they are also stated to be halogen-free with low toxicity and smoke levels in the event of fire and offering proven long-term adhesion, although applied to the cleaned steel in a single shot without the need for a primer. The coatings claim other properties including excellent resistance to pollutants, chemicals, impacts and abrasion.
Food is another area where Plascoat coating materials are making their mark. Talisman 10 and 20, two of the latest Plascoat polyolefin coating materials, have been cleared for use in contact with refrigerated foodstuffs by the US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA).
Food Contact Plastics Certificates of Conformity with the FDA's test requirements have been awarded following independent testing in accordance with Code of Federal Regulations (CFR21) Section 175.300 (Resinous and Polymeric Coatings).
The FDA clearance provides a particular boost to Plascoat's plans for the wider application of Talisman 10, with manufacturers of freezer shelving, baskets and evaporator trays among the principal targets.
Talisman 10 has already created a lot of interest among leading European dishwasher manufacturers following performance successes in both chemical and mechanical evaluations. According to Plascoat the material has been identified as a genuine alternative to polyamide (nylon) for the coating of dishwasher baskets.
According to Plascoat, OEMs have been quick to respond to the potential of Talisman 10 to provide both significant unit cost savings and a range of claimed performance benefits. They include superior stain, salt and "rinse aid" resistance.
The development of Talisman 10 re-affirms Plascoat's position as a key coatings material producer for the appliance market. Plascoat is already the largest single supplier of polyethylene coating powders.
