Scientific Technologies, Inc. (STI) introduces a new long range, single-beam safety controller, designed for perimeter and access guarding in industrial settings. The new BeamSafe® II has a 60 m range, and is available in a rugged cast- aluminium enclosure for explosion proof environments (Plate 9).

The BeamSafe safety control system consists of one transmitter and one receiver. No interconnecting cables or separate control enclosure are required. Four separate visible indicators, mounted on the receiver, provide instant information on system's clear, blocked or interlocked status conditions, as well as signal strength. Additional diagnostic indicators on the receiver provide codes to assist with trouble-shooting.
To enhance immunity to weld flash and ambient light, the BeamSafe's infrared light beam is coded with four possible transmit codes. This eliminates interference from other BeamSafe units installed in close proximity.
A tight beam angle reduces problems associated with reflective surfaces and the unit's built-in lens heater is useful in environments where condensation may form on the transmitter or receiver lenses.
The BeamSafe II has been designed in accordance with IEC 61496, prEN 50100, EN 954-1 and features a “diverse redundant” microprocessor for safe, reliable operation. It can be used on machinery that stops consistently and immediately, anywhere in its cycle or stroke.
