Mini grippers offer precision
Mini grippers offer precision
Keywords: Pneumatic grippers, Precision instruments
Automation specialist Festo has launched a range of miniature pneumatic grippers with a focus on high levels of precision. The HGPP range is aimed at the electronics and packaging industries in small parts handling and assembly applications (see Plate 7).
The new parallel mini grippers offer high accuracy and repeatability with fast actuation while compact dimensions permit installation in small spaces. Precision is assured with the use of backlash-free ball bearing guides to deliver repetition accuracies of better than 0.02mm. Integrated hall effect sensors can provide positional monitoring of the jaws in three positions. Thanks to the sensors' minimal hysteresis, three symmetrically round components with, for example, dimensions of 4, 4.1 and 4.2mm can be differentiated. Faster cycle rates are obtainable with a closing time of less than 0.1 second.

The HGPP range currently comprises three models with piston diameters of 12, 16 and 20mm and stroke lengths of 5, 10 and 15mm respectively. Despite the compact size, high grip forces of 60, 110 and 170N are achieved at 6-bar pressure. Service life is over 20 million cycles.
The mini grippers are a further addition to the Festo handling range that allows complete Pick and Place system solutions to be selected from standard catalogue items and assembled using only allen keys and screwdrivers.
