Notes on key reviews in this issue

  • Aslib Directory of Information Sources in the United Kingdom (RR 2014/122). Seventeenth edition of this stalwart of UK reference collections previously reviewed in these columns in 2011 (RR 2011/351). Remains the pre-eminent guide to the content and collections of British libraries and other information providers, but continues to appear only as a print volume.

  • Encyclopedia of Creativity, Invention, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (RR 2014/136). A three-volume set from Springer comprising 274 entries across a wide range of subjects but with the focus mainly on creativity, etc., in relation to business.

  • International Encyclopedia of Ethics (RR 2014/125). Another major encyclopedic undertaking from Wiley-Blackwell, this nine-volume set, also available online, fully justifies the epithet “international” having more than 700 entries from a wide range of contributors drawn from institutions worldwide. Unlikely to be superseded, at least in the short term, as the major reference work in the field of ethics.

  • Old Maps Online (RR 2014/157). Project, until recently supported by JISC, to make available collections of old maps held in libraries and institutions throughout the world. Participating organizations making accessible some or all of their older map holdings include the British Library, Dutch National Archives, Harvard University, National Library of Scotland and the New York Public Library.

  • ProQuest Statistical Abstract of the USA (RR 2014/134). A full review of the new ProQuest electronic version of the long-established and key data source Statistical Abstract of the USA. ProQuest took responsibility for publication following the 2012 decision that the gratis online version, previously provided by the US Census Bureau, would be discontinued.

  • Routledge Performance Archive (RR 2014/152). Covering the theatre of the past 50 or so years, this Web resource provides streaming video and audio footage with relevant critical commentary. Produced in conjunction with Digital Theatre, a company working with British theatres to capture performances on screen, the resource is available on a subscription basis with regular updating and enhancement. Has some similarities with the Alexander Street Press product Theatre in Video http://alexanderstreet.com/products/theatre-video).
