Mexican government human rights failings will continue

Wednesday, July 31, 2024

Significance

AMLO took power in 2018 promising to address Mexico’s poor human rights record. As his presidency ends, militarised policing has done little to reduce insecurity and authorities nationwide still fail routinely to prevent or punish human rights violations.

Impacts

  • The US elections and a potential Donald Trump win will raise pressure for harsher migration policies.
  • Sheinbaum could face a particularly strong backlash if she is perceived to fail on addressing gender violence and women’s rights.
  • Perceived security successes in Mexico City while Sheinbaum was mayor will be difficult to replicate nationally.
