New Mexican state airline will be revitalised
Thursday, September 7, 2023
Significance
Mexicana stopped operating in 2010 and was declared bankrupt in 2014. The revived firm -- based at the new and underused Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) -- will be Mexico’s first state-owned carrier since the privatisation of Aeromexico in 2007.
Impacts
- Pragmatic initial ambitions for the airline will limit costs to the exchequer and negative impacts on public finances.
- AMLO will exploit the symbolism of Mexicana’s revival to boost support for his party in the 2024 elections.
- Military management of Mexicana, Tulum airport and the Maya Train will give the armed forces a central role in Yucatan tourism.
