Major South African prosecutions will depend on reform

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

Significance

Although crucial to carrying out the recommendations of the 'Zondo Commission' on state capture and to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s project of reforming the state apparatus, the NPA has not produced any successful high-profile state capture prosecutions since Batohi took the helm in 2018.

Impacts

  • The recent appointment of a new police commissioner may improve the prospects of better police support to the NPA.
  • Recovery and reconstruction efforts following major flooding in Kwa-Zulu Natal will open new avenues for graft.
  • ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule's ongoing suspension will hinder opposition to Ramaphosa in the upcoming year.
  • Delays in implementing anti-corruption reforms may lead businesses to hold back on committing to new investments.
