Subject

Prospects for the US economy to end-2020.

Significance

Economic activity suddenly stopped in mid-March to curb the spread of COVID-19, ending the longest GDP expansion ever. Tens of millions of employees have been laid off but the government has mitigated further damage by sending all citizens money, offering unemployed workers extra insurance, and offering firms different types of loans that will be forgiven if they keep paying salaries, rent and utility expenses. Activity is restarting, sector by sector, community by community, but the recovery will be disjointed.
