Significance

Nicaragua’s fortunes diverged markedly from those of the rest of the region this year, setting it on a different path to its neighbours for the year to come. With three major elections scheduled for 2019, Central America faces some uncertainty. Arguably, however, the greatest threats over the year come not from unknown future administrations, but from governments that are already in place, both within the region and outside.
