Religion will feature heavily in Indonesia’s elections

Tuesday, August 28, 2018

Significance

Earlier this month, President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo selected Ma’ruf Amin, head of the conservative Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), as his running mate. Jokowi’s challenger will be former military commander Prabowo Subianto, who picked Sandiaga Uno, then deputy governor of Jakarta, as his running mate.

Impacts

  • Jokowi’s selection of Ma’ruf may cost him support among minority communities.
  • Prospective domestic and foreign investors may be concerned by the prospect of Ma’ruf as vice president.
  • Muhammad Taufik, previously jailed for corruption, could become deputy governor of Jakarta, with Sandiaga stepping down post-nomination.
