Jordanian protesters will push for more concessions
Wednesday, June 6, 2018
Significance
The government is suffering a wave of popular anger after its austerity programme caused days of countrywide protests. Changing ministers is a standard royal method to deflect criticism -- Jordan on average has a new cabinet every 15 months. This time, however, demonstrators seem determined to change policy, not just personalities.
Impacts
- Jordan may have to revisit subsidies on basic staples such as flour.
- The monarchy may consider democratic reforms in order to insulate itself from direct criticism.
- Efforts to secure aid from other sources will intensify.
